This tiny still life study of a bunch of roses in a wine carafe celebrates the beauty and serenity in small everyday things. I painted this piece primarily to calm my mind and heart with the gentle softness both of the subject matter and water-based mediums which flow effortlessly and have an ethereal quality to them. It remains a welcome distraction from all the hard, sharp edges in life and all those terrible things that are beyond my control to fix.

I also wanted to use up some of my old art materials, some of which are over 10 years old. This personal project is partly about reducing waste and also about committing (finally) to all those tiny promises I made to the universe when I purchased those art materials in the first place. I was pleasantly surprised by how easily I slipped back into gouache and how well the paints worked after so long sat in the box.
