Bats

A4 linocut print, Limited edition x7

"Bats" / "Batty" / "Bats in their belfry": English slang for muddled or insane. Often used as derogatory terms to describe older women suffering from dementia.

A limited edition of 7 hand-made linocut prints of Serotine bats (Eptesicus serotinus) hunting moths by the light of the full moon.

This image celebrates one of Britain’s largest bat species, currently classified as 'Vulnerable' in England and Wales. Bats have been historically persecuted in Europe for a variety of reasons. This design champions bats and shines a light on how their name is often used as a derogatory term revealing other forms of prejudice: primarily against elders and people with mental health problems.

Printed on 130gsm fine-grained cartridge paper. Available in two mount choices; framing service also available. All limited-edition prints are  numbered and signed in graphite. Date, edition and signature repeated on reverse of mount. Each editioned print includes a certificate of authenticity.

Please note that these are handmade items, so each one is unique and individual products may vary slightly from the images shown.

This is a reduction-method print, which means the block the print is made from is progressively destroyed during the process. This means that the limited-edition run will only ever be the only copies in existence.

Artist's proofs (AP) of this design are also available for a discounted price. These are copies with imperfections that did not make the limited edition, but are still unique and beautiful artworks.
